On occasion the veterinarian may recommend further tests be conducted on your pet to help them better understand any problems that may be occurring with your pet’s health. When these tests are conducted a sample will be required from your pet. The sample to be tested will differ depending on the type of test however could include a blood sample, a urine sample, a fluid sample from a cavity or lump, skin scraping or a swab. The majority of these samples can be collected when your pet is conscious however some will require sedation which will be discussed with you at the time of your consultation.
At BVH we conduct most tests in-house including standard blood tests, parasite analysis, urine tests and fine needle aspiration with cytology. Sometimes external laboratory tests may be required which include haematology (red and white blood cell tests), endocrine (hormone) related tests, histopathology (biopsy and cancer diagnosis) and microbiology related tests (infection diagnosis).
